REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL GROUPS: INTERROGATING OUR PROTAGONIST

In my research into social groups, I came across an interesting method for exploring character. For Pen Densham in Riding the Alligator, an Oscar nominated filmmaker with 16 feature films and over 300 hours of TV to his credit, every writer and director should use a check list of questions to ask their characters when they develop their characters. It is like a questionnaire or interrogation in which the questions 'open up your understanding of who or what your characters might be. This is essential for motivating your character's choices, reactions and dialogue through the story'. I accessed this method through the Filmscape website here.
For the purposes of this exercise, we imagined that in the full-length feature film version of our production, our protagonist Sam the photographer would be driven to further acts of control. His aggression may well spill over into violence. If his frustration over his desire to exercise complete control over his fiancee spills over into violence and lands him in trouble with the police, he is likely to be subject to investigation and psychiatric assessment. This exercise helps us explore his character creatively.

PLANNING: PHOTOSHOOT SCENE RESEARCH

I decided to use Instagram for this piece of research as I am researching photographers and Instagram is about photography. I found an article on fashion photographers staying relevant on Instagram which can be viewed here.

'But what was once the traditional route for respected fashion photographers has morphed into something quite different more recently. Developments online, particularly the explosion in popularity of social media, has seen the fashion photography scene shift somewhat. “Some clients won’t even hire you unless you have many followers on social media,” says Justin Borbely, a London-based photographer whose work has been featured in i-D, The New York Times, Elle, Tatler, and others.'

'“Marketing used to be about product, place, price and promotion, whereas nowadays everything focuses on creating, curating, connecting and culture,” explains Ingemann Holm-Nielsen. “This shift in promoting products of course also influence the visual images, the PR strategy and how professionals in the industry work. Suddenly it might not be enough to be a talented photographer if you don’t have the right network or thousands of followers on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat or elsewhere.” '

Below is my Instagram with the posts I made on David Bailey.

PLANNING: STORYBOARD

My group created a storyboard for our film opening. This is to help us stay on track with time and so we don't differ from our storyline. Every detail about each scene is written below the post-it note. We used post-it notes as we could move around scenes more easily.

RESEARCH: PETE'S MEDIA BLOG

RESEARCH: OCR EXAMINERS REPORT (2015)

I have looked at the OCR Examiners report for 2015 and the G321 Foundation Portfolio for 2015. It was a useful thing to read as it conveys how i should keep my blog (neatly) and how i should be working individually most of the time.

RESEARCH: EXIT POLLS

RESEARCH: THE ART OF THE TITLE- SE7EN (1995)

The title sequence starts with a close-up shot of a book, this creates a sense of mystery for the viewer as they don't know what's in it,next the shot changes to a high-angle shot looking down on the book. There are lots of different shots of objects close up, this intrigues the audience as they do not know what the objects mean.

The Mise-En-Scene conveys what to expect from the film and the overall tone, which is quite ominous. The lighting is very dark adding to the ominous tone and there are lots of shadows which could be someone lurking around. This is a very clever idea that would be very useful for my film opening as I am thinking of doing thriller/horror.

The first credit is the production company "New Line Cinema", they are first to convey there importance. The credits are shown as a messy flicker on the screen, the credits flickering makes the viewer think of a flickering light bulb about to run out of light.

The music used is mostly non-diegetic but some sounds are more naturalistic.  For example, sometimes a very high pitched noise occurs which makes the audience think it is someone screaming, which creates tension as it is an unsettling sound. Also as the music is fast pace it emphasises the genre which is thriller.

FILMING OUR PRELIM

We filmed our prelim in our lesson on Tuesday. My group was Bea, Ryan, Xander and Ollie. At the beginning of filming we round it hard to get the camera shots right as we it was our first time shooting. We used a Grand room with large windows in hope to get good lighting. However when we looked back at the film it was different lighting from different angles, but we edited it to look the same when we were editing. As we got more comfy around shooting we were able to create more difficult shots such as shot reverse shots and zoom/focus shots.
