At the beginning of Nowhere Boy the production company is clearly shown by the logos and icons. Firstly "Icon", followed by "Film Four", then information that "The National Lottery" funding was delivered from the UK Film Council. There are co-productions that spread the finance, "Northwest Vision and Media", "Lip Sync Productions", "Hanaway Films" and "Ecosse Films Production".
The director is announced by the titles "A Sam Taylor-Wood film". The title of the film is finally shown by having the biggest text so far, centre screen, "Nowhere Boy". We have been hinted to the name of the film by the exchange between John Lennon and the Headmaster where he says "Your going nowhere".
The establishing shot shows a grand, imposing, classical building which contrasts with the boy scampering through the big pillars. The shot conveys how small the young boy is compared to the building as it is a low angle shot. However, the boy seems unfazed by the big building which is symbolic as he is very rebellous. The shot quickly and sharply cuts to a birds eye shot where the young boy just fell into bed, the high angle shot creates the representation of the boy as vulnerable. Also we can see the time period as he is wearing traditional pyjamas.
This sequence works as a film opening in that it sets up conflict between the two central characters: the boy (John Lennon) and his guardian (Aunt Mimi). This is essential in hooking the audience's interest.
The next scene conveys a different relationship between John and his other guardian (Uncle George), there more playful and loving which is shown by a two shot where the hug each other. This conveys the family dynamics of the main characters clear to the audience.
There is classic rock n' roll music(1950) in the background to convey the time period more clearly to the audience. There are specific lyrics in the song that foreshadow how the main character (John Lennon) will act. For example "I'm a real wild one".

ReplyDeleteif you devise a relevant topic sentence (say, " The STYLE of the opening reflects the genre, which is a biopic" you then support this with illustration (referencing natural lighting, period mise-en-scene, contemporary music).
Another convention of film openings is introducing the term THEME(John's rebelliousness; strained family relationships): you understand how that is conveyed in the opening. All you have to do is adapt your written style: " A film opening normally conveys the theme; here, ..."
